Searching through boxes in my closet looking for pieces of me that made sense. Sorting through keepsakes - concert stubs, movie tickets, notes passed from youth, and yearbooks. In seeking myself, I discovered a piece from my grandmother. Her nursing school yearbook from 1938.
The spine of the yearbook crackling, frozen pristine images over 80 years old. Flipping past faces, searching for hers. An inscription from one of her friends jumps off the page- “To one who is often misunderstood but one who understands what is difficult for so many to grasp the meaning of”.
A gifted history.
A kindred spirit.
Hello friends! I decided to kickoff another round of 100 words a day! Starting today and ending on 3/31/25. Don’t worry- I won’t bombard your inbox every day. I’ll be compiling them all into a single piece once a week. However, if you want to catch the dailies, keep an eye out for them on Notes.
I’m doing this exercise for me- because honestly it’s my favorite thing to do. I like giving myself a small container to work within and will pull from various things to kickstart my creativity. They will all be memoir based. I give myself an object and a memory and it all builds from there. Today’s was my grandmother’s yearbook. Who knows what tomorrow will bring! I just know that I can’t wait.
This is my own little creative joyride rebellion to keep the absolute bananas of every day life at bay.
Thanks for being here and sticking around through all of it. I hope wherever you are you find your own creative rebellion!
Lots of love -
Mesa
You look so much like your grandmother! I love the message, and I'm weirdly obsessed with old writings, like the actual penmanship, so I loved seeing the photo of the yearbook page. I used to comb through old letters at my grandmother's house and began to know my ancestors by their handwriting. I'm thinking of starting some snail mail relationships as well, because it feels like a breath of fresh air right now. Wow, that was a total tangent this evening. All this to say, I'm delighted you're doing more 100 word masterpieces!<B
A great writing container. Impressive
