We lived in a motel off Las Vegas Boulevard, the Blue angel guarded the opening. The cold December morning was gray, snow was possibly coming. We had construction paper in red, green, gold, white, and blue, Elmer’s glue, glitter in silver and gold, yarn in red and green. The tree was up and had been sprayed with fake snow. All I wanted was a white christmas. My mother’s deft fingers made holes in the snowflakes we’d made, pulling yarn through each to string them together. Blue snowmen, green trees, red bulbs adorned with gold glitter. The first perfect Christmas alone.
